A tricky term.

A tricky term.

We often use time-related terminology in our daily lives; some concepts are perfectly clear, others are harder to grasp, and some are so vague—so "elastic"—that it is virtually impossible to pin down exactly what is meant.

In such cases, we need precision—specifically regarding the term "early morning."

Yes, if you arrange to meet someone at noon, the meaning is clear; the same applies if you say a train will arrive at its destination at midnight. But "early morning"? It is completely unclear when it begins or ends.

Public transport drivers who head out for their morning shifts while it is still dark might well be the ones who know the answer.

Then again, the term likely has a physiological basis that varies from person to person: for some, "early morning" is the time of sunrise, while for others, that moment leans closer to midday.

Even the moon—which risks tumbling down the chimney—doesn't know when "early morning" begins or ends; after all, it is known as a nocturnal luminary, never a morning one.
